On 6th May 2024, Department of Humanities and Social Sciences of Graphic Era Deemed to be University in collaboration with Graphic Era Hill University organized a Community Outreach Program at Rishikesh Goonj(NGO) as a Creativity, Activity and Service initiative and integration with the unit on ‘Sustainability’. A total number of 60 students including B.Tech and BA(H) Sociology accompanied with Dr. Nidhi Tyagi (Associate Professsor, Humanities and Social Sciences) and Ms.Nidhi Verma (Assistant Professor, B.Tech Department)went for the visit.

The objective of the visit was to observe how Goonj, an NGO, extends itself and encourages practices that promote sustainability, supports different groups in our society. The NGO lays special emphasis on their continuous work with people impacted by the winter cold and floods. The visit provided the selected students, an opportunity to see the practical aspects of recycling, upcycling and the different uses of the materials collected, to understand the sustainability of our natural resources and ways to connect with society. It was also an opportunity to further help students to develop attitudes of empathy and tolerance while being caring and responsible citizens. They talked fervently about the humanitarian work observed at the institute.
The visit sensitized the students and enabled them to sympathize with those who do not receive the requisite help and support. The students also realized that this was not charity but an opportunity to become responsible citizens and good human beings.

The students also thanked to the Teachers for giving them the vision to do something for the community. The Head of Humanities and Social Sciences Dr. Prabha Lama appreciated the initiative taken by the Department to sensitive the students towards Social responsibility.
