Facilities | Petroleum Engineering

The department has spacious, well organized, well-ventilated, well-furnished, state-of-the-art laboratories with equipment required for the Petroleum Engineering program. It also contains other facilities such as Internet, printing, and departmental library etc.
Department is well equipped with many high-end laboratories and state of art Computing facilities as follows:

1. High-Performance Reservoir Modeling and Simulation Lab

  • Having latest industry standard application software’s i.e. RMS (Reservoir modeling software) of EMERSON, Geo-log of Paradigm, Geo-soft of CGG, Open Detect & Power-log for exploration and exploitation of oil and gas field. These software’s are a part of curriculum and intensively used in lab exercises, hand on practices, minor and major projects  in VI and VIII semesters.
  • These software’s are installed on high-end workstation having 32 GB RAM with 64 bit OS both in window & Linux. The estimated cost of these software’s are worth USD 6,195,000.

2. Geology Lab

  • Geology Laboratory is well equipped with a wide range of studies in Petroleum and Geosciences. The laboratory has a rich depository of rock forming minerals, rocks (Igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic), fossils, geological structure samples, Brunton compass, Handheld GPS etc which provides an opportunity to learn hands-on identification and interpretation of minerals, rocks and structure like fold fault etc, very significant in the geological field excursion.
  • This laboratory also provide microscope facility for studding the optical properties of minerals in thin section. The department also has a rich collection of microfossils very significant for petroleum exploration, paleoclimatic and paleoceanographic studies.
  • The dynamic system of the earth like rivers, wind, glaciers, sea coasts etc play an important role in petroleum studies. This labs  provides an opportunity to study fundamental of physical geology through use of topographic maps, satellite images and the 3-D model of different earth processes and land forms.

3. Fluid & Particle Mechanics Lab

  • To understand the fluid  mechanics a high precision  Fluid & Particle Mechanics Laboratory has been setup  for a petroleum engineers. The type of fluid, its flow rate have a high impact  during the production of crude oil. The department has full focus on  Fluid & Particle Mechanics Laboratory keeping in view the demands of oil and gas industries.

4. Heat & Mass Transfer Lab

  • Heat and mass transfer play a crucial role for distillation process. The department is well equipped with HMT lab of high standard. This lab provide a lead role to  the students to understand the design aspect of different engineering equipment that is frequently used in the field of drilling, exploration and exploitation of oil and gas. Different types Equipments i.e. heat exchanger, distillation column, condensers, evaporators etc. can be designed by studying the different modes of heat and mass transfer.

5. Drilling Fluid Lab

  • Drilling fluid play an important role for drilling and logging engineering. This lab provides an opportunity to the students for preparation of different drilling fluids required in different type of formations. The technical parameters i.e. pH value, Mud density, preparation of water base and oil base mud, type of clay used in mud preparation etc. play an important role in drilling and cementing.

6. Instrumentation  & Control Lab

  •  Instrumentation  & Control Lab has been design to develop and install the devices and systems used in rigs & plants. The lab provide the information of types of sensors used in  oil and gas field i.e.  RTD sensors, thermostats, thermocouple etc. for calculating the Transfer function and Step response of first order systems arranged in Interacting mode and non-interacting mode.

7. Petroleum Testing Lab

  • The lab helps the students in measuring the quality of the crude oil by calculating the different saturation and cut-off points like Smoke point, Aniline point, Viscosity, Fire point, Flash point, Pour points etc. These points are used in the quality control of the petroleum products.

8. Museum

  • A Sequential workflow of Oil & Gas exploration and exploitation has been designed and illustrated in pictorial and chart form to provide an clear understanding to new comers Petroleum Engineers and visitors in the Museum. Various live models made by our students have been kept to demonstrate the various operational function of the industry.
