Frequently Asked Questions

The primary eligibility criteria are stipulated by the UGC (University Grants Commission) guidelines:

  • Academic Qualification: A Master's degree (M.A./M.Sc.) in Psychology or a closely allied discipline (e.g., Applied Psychology, Clinical Psychology, Cognitive Science) from a recognized university.
  • Minimum Marks: A minimum of 55% aggregate marks (or equivalent grade) in the Master's program. Relaxation may be applicable as per university norms.
  • Entrance Exam: Candidates must either clear a national-level test like UGC-NET/JRF (which may grant exemption from the university's entrance test) or qualify the University's Ph.D. Entrance Test (PET). Admission is finalized after an interview/viva-voce.

Research fit is paramount for a Ph.D. in Psychology. Unlike other programs, the Ph.D. is an apprenticeship in research, requiring a close, long-term working relationship with a supervisor.

  • Actionable Step: You are strongly encouraged to review the research profiles and recent publications of the faculty in your area of specialization (e.g., Cognitive Neuroscience, I-O Psychology, Developmental Psychology).
  • Initial Contact: It is highly recommended to reach out to a potential supervisor before applying with a brief email outlining your research interest and how it aligns with their ongoing work. This pre-screening ensures mutual interest and resource availability.

The duration and structure are guided by the UGC Ph.D. Regulations:

  • Duration: The minimum duration is three years, with a maximum of six years typically allowed for full-time scholars.
  • Coursework: Candidates should refer to the program prospectus for a detailed overview of the course structure.
  • Purpose: The coursework prepares scholars to formulate research questions, select appropriate psychological tools, and conduct rigorous analysis for the final thesis.

The Research Proposal is the single most important document. It must clearly demonstrate the novelty and feasibility of your research:

  • Research Gap: Clearly articulate the specific theoretical or empirical gap in the existing psychological literature that your research will address (the "So What?" question).
  • Theoretical Framework: Outline the psychological theories (e.g., Social Cognitive Theory, Attachment Theory) that will anchor your study.
  • Methodology: Detail the specific psychological methods you will use (e.g., experimental design, psychometric testing, interview protocols, fMRI) and justify why this methodology is the most suitable way to test your hypothesis.
  • Ethical Considerations: Identify potential ethical concerns, especially for studies involving vulnerable populations or sensitive topics, and describe measures to ensure ethical compliance.
