B.Sc. Geology

B.Sc. Geology is a three-year undergraduate program that teaches students about the study of the earth’s physical structure, history, and processes, including minerals, rocks, fossils, earthquakes, volcanoes, and natural resources.

B.Sc. Geology is a three-year undergraduate degree program focusing on the Earth’s physical structure, composition, and history. It encompasses various disciplines such as mineralogy, petrology, geochemistry, geophysics, and sedimentology. Students learn about the formation of rocks, minerals, and fossils and the processes that shape the Earth’s surface and interior. The program emphasizes fieldwork, laboratory work, and theoretical knowledge to help students understand the geological processes that have shaped our planet. In 2021, the Petroleum Engineering and Earth Sciences Department started offering B.Sc. Geology program.

The goal is to equip students with fundamental and specialized geology knowledge that they may use in fields including the petroleum industry, mineral exploration and exploitation, water resource management, environmental protection, and the management of natural hazards.

The department is dedicated to delivering top-notch instruction and turning out geologists and geoscientists who are well-educated, taught, and supported by its highly competent professors and infrastructure. This program helps students pursue professions in geosciences, which have a wide range of applications in governmental, private, and non-governmental organizations as well as in higher education and scholarly research both in India and abroad.

    Key Highlights

B.Sc. Geology with in-depth study in Geochemistry, Economic Geology, Paleontology, Carbon Management, Sustainable Development, Geostatistics, and Remedial Mathematics is a comprehensive undergraduate degree program that provides students with a strong foundation in the geological sciences and their practical applications. Here are some key highlights of this program:

    • Geochemistry: The study of the chemical composition of the Earth and its processes. Students will learn about the chemical properties of minerals, rocks, and water, and how these properties can be used to understand the history of the Earth and its environments.
    • Palaeontology: Deals with fossils and the history of life on Earth. Students will learn about the evolution and diversity of life on Earth, the geological and environmental changes that have shaped life over time, and how to interpret the fossil record.
    • Carbon Management: This equips students with reducing carbon emissions and managing the carbon cycle to mitigate the impact of climate change. Students will learn about the technologies and strategies used to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and how to manage carbon storage in the atmosphere, oceans, and land.
    • Geostatistics: The study of statistical methods applied to geology and geological data. Students will learn about statistical techniques to analyse geological data and make predictions about geological processes.
    • Remedial Mathematics: consists of mathematical concepts and techniques used in geology and related sciences. Students will learn basic mathematical concepts such as algebra, calculus, and statistics and how to apply these concepts to geological problems.

Difference between B.Sc. Geology and B.Sc. (Hons) Geology: B.Sc. (Hons) Geology is a 4-year program that includes research and project work, while B.Sc. Geology is a 3-year program that covers the basics and provides a foundation for careers in geology-related fields.
