Venue: Khatling Glacier-Gangi village to Ghansali, Tehri Garhwal

A scientific exploration from Khatling Glacier-Gangi village to Ghansali, Tehri Garhwal Uttarakhand (12-17 September 2025)

The Srot se Sangam Scientific Exploration, jointly organized by Graphic Era University, Dehradun, and the Mount Valley Development Association, commenced on 12th September 2025 and will be concluded on 17th September at Ghansali.

The journey began at Gangi village, located near the Khatling Glacier—the source of the Bhilangna River in Tehri Garhwal, Uttarakhand. This scientific exploration led by Dr VP Uniyal Professor, Department of Bioscience and Dr Amar Dabral, Professor, Department of Hospitality and Management, and Ph D scholars Ms. Vartika Negi and Ms. Anchal Saklani, Graphic Era deemed to be University Dehradun.

The initiative actively involved the communities of Gangi and other villages of the Bhilangna valley to understand issues related to climate change, sustainable development, and recent natural disasters, along with their cascading impacts on Himalayan states, especially in Uttarakhand.

The primary aim of this exploration is to observe, document and integrate ecological, cultural, and biodiversity dimensions of the fragile Bhilangna River ecosystem within the framework of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The padyatra brought together subject-matter experts, academicians, students, government officials, and local communities on a shared platform to highlight and record the ecological, climatic, and cultural transitions in the river basin.

The focus areas are aligned with: Water and sanitation; climate action, life on land, documenting biodiversity, wildlife, and agro-ecology transformations in the fragile Himalayan ecosystem. Preserving traditional knowledge systems, cultural heritage, and adaptive community practices. Zero Hunger, studying agro-ecology, food systems, and sustainable farming practices of mountain communities. Strengthening collaboration between academia, government agencies, civil society, and local communities.

This exploration thus presents a unique opportunity to understand the impact of climate change not only on ecology and biodiversity but also on socio-economic systems, cultural traditions, and livelihoods of the Himalayan people. The documentation and insights will contribute towards developing community-led, sustainable strategies for conserving the Bhilangna River basin while ensuring ecological balance and resilient livelihoods.
