About The Program

The seamless integration of human and artificial cognition leveraged through Emerging Technologies is the core of our practice. This dynamic, transdisciplinary method builds a foundation for leading innovation in user-environment-centered problem-solving and creative product development.

The B.Sc. (Hons.) Animation and VFX Design program is a comprehensive four-year undergraduate program that develops imaginative, ethical, and technically proficient creators for the contemporary animation, games, VFX, and immersive-media industries. Structured as a three-year B.Sc. pathway followed by a fourth-year Honours stage, it combines artistic practice, design thinking, scientific inquiry, computing, and emerging technologies to strengthen Human Intelligence (HI) for creative problem-solving in an AI-enabled world.

The curriculum nurtures well-rounded creative minds across physical, digital, and visual domains. Students begin with visualisation, design fundamentals, storytelling, materials and processes, creative coding, systems thinking, and observation. They then progress into digital art, 2D and 3D animation, motion graphics, branding, digital media, information design, interface design, advertising, and integrated media practice.

Learning advances through a human-centered and production-oriented approach. Students research audiences and contexts, develop narratives and characters, prototype mechanics and interactions, build digital assets, and test complete experiences. Emerging AI tools, real-time rendering, game engines, AR/VR, and virtual production are approached as creative and technical systems whose use must remain ethical, inclusive, culturally aware, sustainable, and purposeful.

The three-year B.Sc. stage culminates in a full-semester Industrial Internship that places students inside professional workflows and collaborative production environments. The Honours year extends the student's practice through Editorial and Publication Design, Advanced Typography, Interaction Design for New Media, Strategic Design, Entrepreneurship and Innovation in Design, and an independent Graduation Project supported by Design Colloquium.

Whether creating animated films, visual effects, interactive systems, games, or immersive worlds, students learn to unite creative vision with technical feasibility and strategic awareness. The program prepares versatile, adaptable, and ethically responsible graduates who can shape future entertainment, communication, education, and experience design while contributing to human well-being and economic growth.

Eligibility Criteria for Admission

  • Academic Qualification : To be eligible for the B.Sc. (Hons.) Animation and VFX Design program, a candidate must have passed the 10+2 examination.
  • Entrance Exam : Candidate's admission may be based on Graphic Era's entrance test, or a personal interview, unless they have a valid score from national-level entrance exams such as UCEED / NID-DAT / NIFT Entrance Exam.

Teaching Pedagogies

The teaching pedagogy for a B.Sc. (Hons.) in Animation and VFX Design is evolving to shift from 'button-pushing' (learning software) to 'creative problem solving' and 'systems thinking'. As we move through 2026, graphic design and animation courses are increasingly focused on preparing students for a landscape defined by AI assistance, real-time rendering, and cross-platform storytelling.

Experiential & Studio-Based Learning

  • Studio Culture & Peer Review: Learning occurs in open, collaborative spaces rather than traditional classrooms. Students work on 'design briefs' that simulate studio environments. Regular 'crit' sessions (peer and faculty reviews) build the thick skin necessary for professional feedback loops.
  • Iterative Prototyping: Focuses on the 'fail fast' philosophy. In game design, students create low-fidelity prototypes, often using paper or simple blocks, to test mechanics and 'game feel' before any digital assets are created.
  • Production Pipeline Simulation: The curriculum is structured to mirror a professional studio's workflow: Pre-production (concept/script), Production (modeling/rigging), and Post-production (lighting/VFX). Students often take specific roles (Art Director, Technical Artist) to understand the collaborative ecosystem.

Future-Ready & Tech-Integrated Pedagogy

  • AI-Augmented Creativity: Rather than viewing AI as a threat, the pedagogy integrates it as a 'co-creator.' Students are taught to use generative tools for rapid ideation, auto-rigging, and texture generation, allowing them to focus more on high-level narrative and art direction.
  • Real-Time Visualisation: Shifting away from traditional offline rendering, the focus is now on 'What You See Is What You Get' (WYSIWYG). Students learn to build environments that render instantly, a skill critical for virtual production (LED wall filming) and live-service games.
  • Spatial Design & Immersive UX: With the rise of AR and VR, students are taught 'spatial awareness.' This involves designing for a 360-degree environment where the 'user' is the camera, requiring a deep understanding of human ergonomics and peripheral visual cues.

Cognitive & Industry-Integrated Input

  • Live-Project Integration: Collaborations with industry partners where students work on 'live briefs.' This provides exposure to real-world constraints such as hardware optimization, budgets, and strict delivery timelines.
  • Narrative & Psychology-First Design: Teaching focuses on 'player psychology' and 'semiotics' (the study of signs and symbols). Students learn why certain colors or sounds trigger specific emotional responses, ensuring their designs are purposeful rather than just aesthetic.
  • Transmedia Storytelling: A holistic approach where students learn to design a 'world' rather than just a 'character.' The pedagogy emphasizes how a story can exist simultaneously as a mobile game, a short film, and an interactive web experience.
