Professor Microbiology
Prof. Ashish Thapliyal is a distinguished researcher and educator with over twenty-five years of academic and research excellence. He has been trained at National Institute of Immunology, New Delhi and has completed his postdoctoral fellowship at the USU, USA, where he made significant contributions to understanding cell signaling mechanisms, particularly the modulation of ion channels by GPCRs. His pioneering work on monomeric RAS proteins and N-type calcium channels using patch clamp electrophysiology has earned him international recognition.
Currently serving as Professor at Graphic Era Deemed to be University, Prof. Thapliyal holds a Ph.D. in Molecular Endocrinology from HNB Garhwal Central University. His research portfolio spans multiple interdisciplinary domains including ion channel electrophysiology, biodiversity conservation, molecular markers, Mycobacterium studies, and mathematical modeling. Prof. Thapliyal's collaborative research with DST Centre of Excellence for Climate Information Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, focuses on modeling vector-borne diseases, particularly malaria transmission dynamics using the VECTRI model in the context of climate change. He is actively developing Anti-Microbial Peptides through innovative applications of machine learning and artificial intelligence. His contributions to understanding anthropogenic impacts on biodiversity conservation have been particularly noteworthy. Ph.D. thesis has been awarded to his fifteen Ph.D. students and eight Ph. D. students are currently enrolled. To his credit he has carried out five extramurally funded research project, filed several patents, two patents have been granted and one of his patent team has completed Transfer of Technology to industry.
Beyond academia, Prof. Thapliyal demonstrates exceptional commitment to community development in rural areas of Uttarakhand. He has been a part of team that established a Technology Resource Center in remote village, funded by the Uttarakhand Council for Science and Technology and Graphic Era Deemed to be University, focusing on value addition of local resources and socio-economic upliftment of marginalized communities and women farmers. His dedication was recognized with the IPR Excellence Award from the Uttarakhand Council for Science and Technology in 2021. Prof. Thapliyal is a member of prestigious organizations including the Society for Neuroscience and Indian Academy for Neuroscience.
